GiveWell Cost-Effectiveness Analysis

I was the point person on GiveWell’s cost-effectiveness analyses from 2016 to 2018. GiveWell evaluates charities and aims to directing funding to charities in the global health and development space that can make the best use of additional funding. While I was at GiveWell, the organization directed roughly $100 million dollars per year to its recommended charities while using its cost-effectiveness models as a key input in its funding decisions.

As the point person on GiveWell’s cost-effectiveness models, I:

  • spearheaded major changes to make the model more transparent, easier to maintain, and less likely to contain errors
  • made adjustments intended to improve the models’ accuracy
  • created new models for estimating the cost-effectiveness of new interventions
  • coordinated with colleagues and external organizations to update models with their latest analyses and data

GiveWell’s current cost-effectiveness model can be found here. The model as it was when I joined the organization can be seen here and compared with the model as it was when I left the organization.
